Summer Lillies

This painting was a fun study in juxtaposition. Broad washes and long cast shadows in the background are balanced by the curly organic shadow shapes of the foliage under the Lillies, and the pure color and staccato notes of the Lillies themselves. wax resist and dry brush effects are both used to create texture in various places in the painting, and the grays and browns of dead foliage and concrete at the bottom of the image contrast with the bright and living colors of the Lillies, and bring a reminder of the whole circle of life, and the impermanence of the fresh blossoms.
